Animal Welfare

Our company owned farms all operate under a group housing environment which gives each animal space and social involvement – allowing it to interact with others and freely move around with high levels of access to food and clean water.

Many of our farms run what is called ‘Eco-Shelters’ which provide plenty of natural light and air movement through large side curtains or awnings on the buildings.

We do not run any ‘Free Range’ operations at this point, though we are investigating this as an option. However we must very carefully consider the heavy impact on the environment and the welfare of the animal itself in the very hot and humid Queensland conditions as this may have a negative impact on the animal; pigs suffer from sunburn and cannot sweat so keeping them cool is a priority.

We can also confirm that our pigs come from farms that have converted to SSFE (Sow Stall Free Environment). Over the past 2 years we’ve worked closely with our supply base to achieve this result, well ahead of the 2017 goal set by the Australian Pork Industry under a voluntary program.
